WHITBY’S gas mains are to benefit from a £125,000 upgrade.

North Yorkshire’s gas pipeline owner Northern Gas Networks is replacing around 1.1km of metallic gas mains with more durable plastic pipes in a move that will ensure the town continues to benefit from a safe and reliable supply of gas for decades to come.

Engineers from Morgan Sindall are already on site carrying out the work on behalf of the gas distributor and it is expected that the project will be complete by the end of March.

The scheme will see new pipe laid on Abbeville Avenue, Elm Grove, Laburnum Grove, Oak Road, Byland Road and Stakesby Road.

All gas customers affected by the mains replacement work have been notified in advance of the work starting by letter.

Northern Gas Networks’ Richie Read apologised for any inconvenience experienced while the work is carried out but said they were committed to doing all they can to ensure Whitby’s gas supply system remains one of the safest in the world.

He said: “We use modern technology wherever possible to cut the number of excavations we make. In addition, the new pipes we are putting in are more durable and flexible with an expected lifespan of around 80 years, so the good news is that once we are done, we won’t need to come back for some time.”
