Whitby and District Coarse Fishing Club opened the 2011 season at the Oaks, Sessay on Sunday 20 March.

On a chilly and overcast day 18 members of the club travelled for the traditional opening match, the Mike Collier Memorial.

Due to overnight frost water temperatures were low and fishing was expected to be hard and it was.

Baits varied from pellet to maggot to pinky and some tried meat paste and sweetcorn without better success. Bites were sporadic and catches random. Pellet had the most consistent result.

An irritating wind blew across the stretch of water for most of the day and when the final whistle blew only the odd fish separated the prize winners, Pete Agar, Kev Little and Gary Smith were separated by minuscule amounts.

Kev Little won the match and the trophy with 9lb 6ox. Peter Agar was runner up with 8lb 12oz and Gary Smith was second runner up with 8lb 5oz.

The prizes were presented by Beth Collier. The evening of the day was pleasantly rounded off with a buffet supper served at Whitby Rugby Club.
