Gym going from strength to strength

THE gym and exercise facilities at Whitby Leisure Centre are literally going from strength to strength.

It is a year since the gym facilities had a £160,000 overhaul and statistics released by Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) show that the leisure centre is out-performing it’s counterparts further down the coast.

Brian Bennett, head of tourism and culture, gave a report to councillors on the health and well-being scrutiny who had asked for figures because of concerns useage of local authority centres was falling.

Numbers of people using Scarborough’s indoor pool had dropped by 4.5% for the period 2010-2011 and for Scarborough Sports Centre it was 8% – yet Whitby’s figure for the same period had increased by 7%.

The take up is being attributed to the investment in facilities, the pool and gym being in the same building, the lack of competition in the town and links with the NHS and GP referrals to the centre for rehabilitation exercise.

Tomorrow between 4pm and 8pm, to mark the first anniversary of the installation of Technogym equipment at the leisure centre, there will be special promotions available on membership packages with free goody bags to be given away.

There will be demonstrations on the equipment, professional instructors on hand to answer queries about training and information about new classes coming up such as Boot Camp and Yogging too.

A free 30 minute appointment with a fitness instructor is available for anyone interested in joining the centre.
