Two companies earn Whitby Civic Society awards after outstanding work

The society’s certificate of excellence scheme recognises exceptional restoration and renovation works in the built or natural environment.

Members of the society were delighted to recently present a coveted award to J3PSO Ltd and E J Newton Building Services.

The award to Danny Jepson of J3PSO was for the sympathetic redevelopment of the frontage of Hoggarth’s Yard on Church Street. Hoggarth’s Yard is on the site of an historical Whitby landmark, the Lemonade Factory.

The development sought to retain the character and the spirit of the original building.

The new property comprises two dwelling houses with the front elevation retaining the proportions, fenestration and archway, reminiscent of the old factory.

Natural dressed stone reclaimed from the rear elevation of the old building was used to form the arch of the façade with handmade red bricks for the upper floors and a delightful typically Whitby red clay pantile roof.

The award to John Newton of E J Newton Building Services was for restoration works of an excellent standard to an old stone wall by Dog Lane, Whitehall Landing.

John and his team restored the wall with an eye for conservation, re-using original stone work where possible.

Aislaby Quarry carved replacement coping stones and brick using the original as a template where the stonework was beyond repair and the new coping stones were rolled in the mud to age the appearance.

Dr John Field, chair of Whitby Civic Society, said: “It was heartening to see local companies taking such pride in their work and the finished projects blending in so well with the surroundings.

“The society’s certificate of excellence scheme signposts good practice and inspires and encourages higher standards of work and that is exactly what we have seen here.”
