Two more virus cases in Scarborough borough - pushing the infection rate up to its highest since late June

The cases were added to the borough’s tally last night (Tuesday) but were recorded on Friday last week.

They are added to the two other cases that were added over the weekend.

The data includes tests carried out in hospitals and also Pillar 2 tests, which is anyone tested at one of the mobile sites in the borough or sent a test to take at home.

The total number of confirmed cases in Scarborough since the start of the pandemic now stands at 568.

It means Scarborough’s seven-day infection rate has climbed once more to 0.4, its highest level since late June, the last time the borough had more than one confirmed case in a seven day period.

Friday August 14 now becomes the first day in the borough with multiple cases since June 20 and with three cases confirmed it is the most in a day since 10 were added on May 28.

The news came the same day that North Yorkshire’s director of public health said that despite an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the last week the county was “not in the ballpark” of areas that are currently on watch lists for infection rates.

Dr Lincoln Sargeant told a meeting of North Yorkshire’s Outbreak Management Advisory Board that people should not let their guard drop but it was unlikely the county would find itself in the same situation as parts of neighbouring West Yorkshire which were put into lockdown last month when cases spiked.

He said: “I have often said that one has to be vigilant as things can change quickly but at the current time there is no imminent risk of a local lockdown or any additional measures in the county from what we can see in the data."
