Scarborough borough's infection rate rises as 76 fines issued in the last week

Having dropped to as low as 98 on Friday the borough’s seven day infection rate per 100,000 people now stands at 106, up one from yesterday.

The average infection rate for England stands at 187 while in North Yorkshire it is now 124.

Yesterday, North Yorkshire Police revealed that a further 76 fixed penalty notices had been given out in the borough in the last week, including to a group of 11 people from Manchester who took a trip to see Whitby Abbey.

The force also revealed that two pubs had been visited after being found to have people inside.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "Two premises were visited, following reports from members of the public that breaches of Coronavirus legislation were taking place.

“Officers attended a premises in Scarborough at 8.35pm Friday February 5 and found a group of people inside, some of whom were found to be playing pool. Alcohol was available and disco lights and music were in use. Seven fixed penalty notices were issued in relation to Covid legislation breaches.

“At around 6pm on Saturday February 6 officers attended a premises in Whitby. A group of people were found to be inside, drinking and watching rugby. Five fixed penalty notices were issued in relation Covid legislation breaches.

“Both premises have been reported to the relevant licensing departments and an investigation is ongoing.”

Mobile testing facilities will be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey in the coming days for anyone with symptoms to get tested.

William Street Coach Park in Scarborough is still offering testing seven days a week from 8am until 8pm.
