Seton School at Staithes shining light on mental health issues
Teachers and pupils at Seaton School in Staithes are shining a light on mental health issues.
Advanced Teaching Assistant Gill Pearson is a trained Thrive practitioner who delivers invaluable sessions to children.
These provide a powerful way of working with children to support optimal social and emotional development, and also as a way to support children who may have struggled with difficult life events to help them re-engage with life and learning.
Deputy Head Teacher Vicki Laven recently qualified as a Mental Health First Aider and now has the knowledge and awareness to be able to identify the signs of poor mental health. She also has the skills to best support individuals in times of crisis.
“Early identification is key to offering support and providing the skills needed to build resilience to succeed in life,” she said.
A range of activities are embedded in the school curriculum to encourage strong well-being. Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles is a priority and the children take part in the Daily Mile, providing them with a sense of freedom and time for their minds to breathe.
All classes are encouraged to practise mindfulness and younger children at Seton love taking part in Paint a Person sessions, where they listen to calming music and enjoy a bit of ‘me time’. The school has also developed strong links with the Men’s Shed which offers support through shared activities, which provide the chance to reconnect with others and revive self-esteem.
Members of the Men’s Shed have made a fantastic shop and car for the school children to play with.
