Whitby Railway Community Shop - 'everyone's happy we're back open'

The newly-opened Whitby Railway Community Shop is proving popular with the local community.

The shop, at the site of the former Happy Shopper on Raglan Terrace, opened in time for Easter.

Briony Davies, who organised a Crowdfunder appeal to help raise money for the shop, said: “We have been open a week and we’ve had so much support.

“Everyone's really happy we’re back open, and they love the look of the place.

“It’s still going to be a while before we have enough funds to replace the window but we are working towards that.

“We had so many generous donations including wood, paint, screws and more from Jewson, a freezer from Whitby Seafoods, kids’ books from the Literacy Trust and a lot of people contributing to the crowdfunder, which raised more than £3,500.

“Not to mention all the time people have put in to make it all come together.”

The shop is open selling essentials for now and will soon to be stocking alcohol and tobacco.

It also features a range of gifts for sale made by local people as well as hand-made greetings cards.

The aim of the Crowdfunder appeal was to help reignite the once thriving community on Whitby’s Fishburn Park by reinstating the local shop and providing a new community hub.
