“We’re very fortunate that we live in one of the nicest parts of the country,” said Mr Hay.

“People are attracted to this area because it’s a tourist destination but a lot of businesses are still shut.

“Anyone who comes will find there is very little to do.”

Mrs Jackson added: “If people come here, there is nothing to do. We are still in lockdown and we are staying that way.”

Fears are growing for the future of Scarborough and Filey’s tourist-reliant businesses as the lockdown continues

While the Prime Minister has announced that some aspects of the hospitality industry could re-open in July, concerns are being raised for the scores of guest houses and bed and breakfasts likely to remain shut for some time to come.

Lynn said: “The smaller the business, the more difficult it will be to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

"Self-catering places and the bigger hotels might be fine.

“But from a personal point of view, opening would mean people coming into my home, and that’s a worry.

“Until we’ve got track and trace we’re looking at a very uncertain future for this business.

“There are some really enterprising businesses that are doing takeaways and that’s helping keep them afloat.

“But it will be difficult for a whole lot of businesses in the town. There are businesses who have had zero income for going on three months now.

Richard added: “A lot of businesses that we have are really going to struggle.

“The B and Bs and guest houses are getting no money in at all. They’re just shut but they’ve still got outgoings to pay.”
