Film line up for January revealed at Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre

Classic movies, the new big-screen version of Cats and a North Yorkshire-set adventure are among the movies at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in January.

Much of The Runaways was filmed on the North York Moors, and director Richard Heap will be on hand to answer questions from the audience after one of the screenings.

Le Mans ‘66: Matt Damon and Christian Bale star in the story of one of motor racing’s greatest showdowns.

Andre Rieu – 70 Years Young: André Rieu is celebrating a landmark birthday and is inviting cinema audiences all over the world to his party.

The Runaways: After their home life is turned upside down three children and the family's donkeys escape, confronting both the harsh landscapes and what it means to be siblings. This throwback to classic children's adventure films but with a modern aesthetic was filmed largely across the North York Moors and stars Tara Fitzgerald and Mark Addy.

Saturday January 11 at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm.

Ordinary Love: Film critic Mark Kermode gave this drama starring Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville a rare five stars, saying: “There’s nothing ordinary about this deeply moving, frequently funny and piercingly insightful drama… a story of everyday love between two people living in the shadow of grief, facing an uncertain future, both together and apart.”

ROH Live – The Sleeping Beauty: Journey into an enchanted world in this landmark production of Petipa’s classic ballet to Tchaikovsky's glorious music.

Thursday January 16 at 7.15pm.

Cats: Based on the stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber (in turn based on TS Eliot’s poems), this new film is directed by Tom Hooper (Les Misérables, The King’s Speech) and stars James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and Francesca Hayward.

Brazil: Terry Gilliam’s masterpiece, starring Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro and Michael Palin, introduced by WEA Film Studies (10 Great Directors) lecturer George Cromack.

Friday January 17 at 7.45pm.

Guys and Dolls: Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra in the classic musical. The Friday afternoon screening is dementia-friendly, with a short introductory talk, refreshments and interval.

Thursday January 23 at 7pm; Friday January 24 at 1.30pm.

Little Women: The March sisters – Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth – are played by Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen, with Laura Dern as Marmee, in this latest adaptation of the classic novel.

ROH Live – La bohème: Richard Jones perfectly captures the opera’s blend of tragedy and comedy and provides an acute analysis of Puccini’s young would-be artists and their lovers, the soulful Mimì and spirited Musetta.
