The 23-year-old found writing the books helped him grief for his grandmother and then his father Jerry Scott.

"He found the process therapeutic to write about the grief and had already imagined the settings and characters," said his mum Helen.

Alex, who went to East Ayton Primary School and Lady Lumley's in Pickering, has been writing since he was seven, starting with fan fiction.

He progressed to original stories and four years ago got the idea for Trem, his first self-published novel. It is a story of love, death and the supernatural w written after the passing of his father. Trem tells the story of Gabby Morgan who, when she was a child, ventured into a haunted mansion for a dare.

Years later she returns and is surrounded by benevolent ghosts, age-old conspiracies and a race of people hidden from humanity for thousands of years.

His second book Trem:Exiles follows the events of the first book. Gabby and Trem journey into the Styx on a dangerous mission to reunite a family.

Meanwhile three assassins face a destiny laid out for them,by a ghost from the past. With time against them, what started as a struggle for survival turns to mystery as Gabby attempts to decipher the visions in her dreams.

"Though it is a supernatural/fantasy, Alex had always intended the story to focus on how loved ones support each other through difficult times," said Helen.

"This takes the form of the relationship that forms between Gabby and Trem, a member of a race of ghost summoning magic users."

The setting of the books is based on locations around Scarborough and Ryedale.
