RAFIKI Jazz will create a spellbinding fusion of music from many traditions at Whitby Coliseum next Friday.
Rafiki means friends in Swahili and Rafiki Jazz means big, vibrant and dancing sounds.
Created in Yorkshire, this 10-piece group includes many internationally-known artists, including hotly-tipped 2008 Radio 3 World Music Award nominee Juldeh Camara, ex Bhundu Boy Kudaushe Matimbah, Gambian kora players Seikou Susso and Pa Bobo Jobarteh, Columbian shamanistic chanter Juan Gabriel Gutierrez and steel pan virtuoso Cath Carr.
Fronted by two great singers, Mim Suleiman from Zanzibar and bossa/jazz singer Rosie Brown, their music is a spellbinding fusion of music from many traditions reflecting their collective experiences as refugee and migrant musicians.
Jim McLaughlin of Musicport, which is promoting the night under The Compass Club banner, said: "This is one of the most exciting musical ventures to have developed in the Yorkshire region in many years and this short inaugural tour is certain to create widespread interest. We think it will be an outstanding night and should have everyone up and dancing, just as long as we can fit all the band on stage."
Rafiki jazz are live at the Coliseum at 8pm. Tickets are priced £10/£8 and are available from (01947) 605089.
