FYLINGDALES singer/songwriter Mike Waterson has composed an original score of music for a performance of Shakespeare's King Lear.
Best known as a member of The Watersons where he performs with his sister Norma and brother-in-law Martin Carthy, Mike has been responsible for shaping and inspiring much of the British folk scene for 40 years.
In the 1968-1972 interval between the two incarnations of The Watersons, he and his sister, the late Lal Waterson, recorded the album Bright Phoebus.
This autumn, the Stephen Joseph Theatre presents the world premiere of Jack Lear, an adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear by Ben Benison which runs from Thursday to 8 November.
Jack Lear will star Barrie Rutter who also directs the play.
Jack is old, tired and finally hanging up his oilskins and sou'wester.
At last he is dividing up his 'kingdom' to his feisty and unforgiving daughters, Morgana, Freda and Victoria.
But years of being raised in hard graft among fish guts and leering trawlermen has made each one long for femininity and freedom.
As Jack looks towards a retirement of rest and putting his boots up, his daughters have other ideas in mind as their resentment rises and surges with the tide.
Mike Waterson will also be performing with Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy at the SJT on 2 November.
