MULTI-instrumentalist Jim Moray and his band are performing live at Whitby Coliseum next Saturday.
The 24-year-old singer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer has created startlingly contemporary recordings of England's traditional songs.
These have been described as the most significant development in folk music in the past 30 years and takes folk music to a different dimension.
Jim is someone who is not afraid to use technology and modern aesthetics to create something truly contemporary while retaining the essence of the traditional song.
His former life as a drummer in a rock band coupled with a keen interest in the wider music scene might be responsible for the edge and creativity he has brought to the music he was immersed in as a child when his parents took him to folk festivals every summer.
Since graduating from Birmingham Conservatoire in summer 2003, Jim Moray caused a revolution in the folk world with the release of the album Sweet England.
In February 2004 at the Radio 2 Folk Awards in an unprecedented move for a previously unknown artist, he was presented with the BBC Radio 2 Album of the Year Award 2004 for Sweet England as well as the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award 2004 for best newcomer.
He was also nominated twice in the Best Traditional Song category for Early One Morning and Lord Bateman.
The Independent featured Sweet England in its Cult Classic series, affirming its impact and influence on the modern folk scene.
Jim's third album, Low Culture, in scheduled for release this month and looks set to confirm his status as one of the most talented truly original artists working in any music genre in the UK.
Jim McLaughlin of Musicport, which is promoting the concert, said: "This is certain to be one of the gigs of the year as far as we're concerned and to get Jim to come and play in a small intimate venue like this is a real coup."
Support is from Yorkshire pianist and singer Belinda O'Hooley who has recently finished a stint as pianist with the much-heralded Rachel Unthank and The Winterset and is now looking to develop her own solo career .
Doors for the gig open at 7.30pm and the concert starts at 8pm.
Tickets are priced £12 (£10 concessions) and are available online at www.whitbymusicport.com or by phone on (01947) 605089.
