WHITBY’S only independent record store is celebrating the art of music in the UK’s biggest new industry event next weekend.
Record Store Day takes place on Saturday 16 April and Folk Devils, on Sandgate, will join in by offering special limited edition releases from bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Jimi Hendrix and Lightnin’ Rod, Radiohead and The Go! Team.
Dave Longmate, of Folk Devils, said: “The event is to celebrate the culture and existence of independent record shops.
The records have been produced exclusively for the day and will mainly be available on vinyl.
The stores themselves will not have heard the record until the day and Mr Longmate added: “Part of the deal is noone can reserve them.
“People need to get here at nine o’clock on Saturday morning.”
BBC Radio 6 Music has created a limited edition vinyl of six mixes featuring the top 20 independent record choices of a selection of different industry personalities and the first six customers on the day will each receive a free copy.
These exclusive releases are extremely limited and fans are advised to shop early to avoid disappointment.
“Artists and record companies are supporting it by putting releases out, primarily in vinyl, and what you get in each shop is going to vary.
Mr Longmate started trading at gigs and festivals before opening his own store, and his store is one of the few survivors of an industry that has been in rapid decline recently.
He added: “Most of the stuff here you wouldn’t get at a supermarket.
“At an independent store you get somebody who knows a bit about the music.
“Most people who work in record shops are enthusiasts about some or all of what they sell.”
