Musicport in Whitby is the first shop in the UK to become involved in an international project to help people access musical instruments.
Music Solidarity is a French-based initiative recycling broken strings and using scrap value to provide instruments for people who would not normally have access to music.
Angela Walton, pictured, is a local co-ordinator for the charity.
Jim McLaughlin said: “We know lots of people in bands and the industry and we thought we could spread the word quite well. People are bringing strings in but we need a kilo to melt and get the money for them so the more the better.”
