Saxophonist Courtney Pine is the first highlight to be announced for this year’s Scarborough Jazz Festival held at Scarborough Spa.

Festival director Mike Gordon said: “This is a real coup for us and we are very excited.

“Courtney performed at the festival in 2008.

“He had most of the audience up and dancing and he just kept going.

“We couldn’t get him off the stage. Since then he has grown enormously in stature and is undoubtedly an international star.”

His 15th album House of Legends has been widely acclaimed.

In the Jazzwise annual critics poll for Album of the Year 2012, the recording was awarded first place by a convincing margin of votes.

“No musician more embodies the dramatic transformation in the British jazz scene over the past twenty years than Courtney Pine.

The ground-breaking, multi-instrumentalist has led a generation of exciting and innovative players who have broadened their styles to take jazz to a wider audience,” said Mike.

The festival takes place from Friday 27 September to Sunday 29 September.

Early bird tickets are available from Friday 1 February.
