Get on the trail of art in Whitby this weekend – with the help of the painters and sculptors who feature in the booklet.

The ‘painting promenade’ is the idea of Teresa Hodgkinson and sprang from meetings in coffee shops and tea rooms in the town.

“I originally started a Facebook page called Whitby Artists and Friends last year. It was just a showcase for local artists to display images of their work,” said Teresa.

“However, I was amazed at the rapid response and growth of the page and realised what a wealth of creative talent there is in Whitby and surrounding villages. This led me to conceive the idea of an arts trail to make the general public aware of this wealth of talent.

“I started a monthly, meeting, of any artists who wished to attend, in local restaurants, so we could discuss our work and ideas. We have had meetings in Teare Woods, Silvers Coffee Lounge, Humble Pie and Mash Shop and La Rosa Hotel. The idea being to encourage strong links with local businesses too.”

Silvers Coffee Lounge and Stonehouse Emporium are providing space for pop-up galleries during the arts trail tomorrow and Sunday, daily from 10am to 4pm.

Eighteen artists are taking part. The booklet – which details which locations are taking part – can be picked up at all the venues.

The main office is 11, Skinner Street.

It is also a a pop-up gallery for five artists.
