Whitby is getting set to step over into the dark side with the first of the year’s Goth weekends.
Taking place from Friday April 23 to Monday April 27 the Whitby Goth weekend is coming into its 21st year and is starting the celebrations early.
Borne out of a small gathering in the Elsinore pub back in 1995 its popularity has grown beyond everyone’s expectations, now attracting international visitors.
But the event is just as popular at home.
With it being the first major event of the summer season it is a boost for pubs, restaurants, shops and the town’s B&Bs and also attracts visitors who are happy just to watch the spectacle of outfits on display.
Len McKnight, Elsinore landlord said: “We are getting a lot of extra beer in for them and will be decorating the pub inside an dout. We are really looking forward to them coming.
“The weekend started out here and a lot of them meet up and go on from here.
“It’s a no problem weekend. We hardly have a broken glass and there’s never any trouble.”
There are music events at various locations, including the Pavilion, from Friday night onwards and fringe events at the Met and Raw nightclub as well as stalls at the Leisure Centre.
