AFTER missing out last year Dionne Hewison was delighted to be crowned Miss Regatta 2011 on Tuesday night.
She was picked out by a panel of judges where she and other hopefuls had a nerve-wracking interview.
Dionne of Wentworth Crescent, Whitby, was nominated by colleagues at Whitby Pavilion where she works as a general assistant.
She told the Gazette: “I was happy because I went for it last year but didn’t get it.
“The questions were hard and there were five other girls so I wasn’t expecting to get it this year.
“My family are jumping from the roof at the moment, my mum won’t stop talking about it.”
Dionne (19), who went to Stakesby Primary, Caedmon and Whitby Community College, has been going to Whitby Regatta since she was a little girl and in previous years has been involved in the rowing.
She added: “It is only since about three years ago that I wanted to be Miss Regatta.
“I am looking forward to it, I am really excited and hoping the rain will be over for the weekend.”
The regatta kicks off tomorrow with a baby show and glamourous granny competition at Whitby Pavilion.
Throughout the weekend there is a whole host of attractions including motorcycle and car displays, a dog show, pig racing, a Red Arrows display, rowing races and vintage tractors and farm machinery.
The grand finale is on Monday at 10pm when there will be a fireworks display.
l Don’t forget there will be a 16-page Regatta picture special in your Whitby Gazette next Friday.
