Could farm buildings be brought back into use?

REDUNDANT farm buildings near Whitby Abbey could be brought back into use according to a town councillor.

Coun Ian Havelock put the idea to colleagues at a Whitby Town Council meeting last week but there is some confusion over the ownership of the buildings at Abbey House.

He said the buildings had been boarded up for ten years or more but were in sound condition.

Coun Havelock added: “It would take little to make them certainly into workshops, craft or design - there is a whole range of uses that they could be put to.

“I don’t know if English Heritage as the owner has anything in the pipeline, we can request having them as workshops to rent perhaps at a reduced rate.”

Coun Sue Boyce said the abbey headland belonged to the Strickland Estate based in Malton and Coun Walter Jones added they needed to be clear about that before taking further action.
