A NEW gallery showcasing the work of a single photographer opened on Pier Road last week, with the backing of the fisheries family who employs him.
Staponas Gallery features the work of Arunas Staponas and has been funded by the Fusco family, who own Quayside Fisheries where Mr Staponas works.
Carol Fusco said: “Arunas came to Whitby seven years ago from Lithuania and walked into Quayside Restaurant looking for a summer job.
“He has worked almost every season at the Quayside since then, returning home each season to study his passion in photography.
“Arunas has spent many hours, sometimes all night, to get the perfect shots, almost all of which are taken in and around Whitby, which he now classes as his home.”
The business, previously Teas’n’Tarts, has been given a complete makeover and is now a contemporary gallery with carefully-selected mood lighting to enhance the photographs, along with background to bring a whole new concept, and has already made an impact with the public.
Mrs Fusco added: “We’ve had lots of good feedback, initial reaction is very good and a lot of people like to see something different down the pier.
“We’ve sold quite a few pictures and are having to restock already.”
Photographs on display are available to purchase in various sizes from greetings cards to large prints.
The gallery is currently open from 10am daily and for more information visit www.staponasgallery.co.uk.
