THE MAYOR of Whitby and local artist Coun John Freeman will open this year’s Christmas Festival of Art with proceeds being donated to help a local teenager.

A sale of works by 30 members of Whitby Art Society and the Endeavour Rotary Club is being held at Sneaton Castle over the weekend.

In his official role coun John Freeman will start the proceedings at noon tomorrow and he has also donated a piece for the event.

It is hoped that through the sale of paintings and artwork enough money can be made to buy Dale (15) a specially-designed computer.

The Whitby Community College pupil was left paralysed from the neck down after a freak accident while swimming in the sea on Whitby beach in the summer.

At the exhibition there will also be a silent auction to bid for six pictures by famous artist Peter Hicks and for a portrait of Captain Cook by Kathryn Davenport.

There is also a lucky dip where ten original pictures worth up to £100 could be snapped up for the price of a greetings card, mulled wine and mince pies.
