Annual planting of Penny Hedge

AN annual ceremony which dates back 800 years will be carried out again in Whitby on Wednesday.

For centuries, the people of Whitby have witnessed the ancient tradition of the Penny Hedge where crowds gather to watch the construction of a hedge made from hazel sticks on the banks of Whitby harbour.

Legend has it that if the hedge is unable to withstand three tides then bad luck will be cast upon the town.

The planting of the Penny Hedge is at 9am but crowds usually gather before then.
