THE latest film offering at the new Swell Cinema monthly film club in Robin Hood's Bay is Passchendaele (15), winner of the Canadian 2009 best motion picture.
You can win a pair of tickets to see the film in the Whitby Gazette's great text vote competition - see Friday 26 February's edition.
Set in the First World War, Passchendaele – which shows on Thursday – tells the story of Sergeant Michael Dunne, who is brutally wounded in France and returns to a military hospital in Calgary where he meets and falls in love with a nurse, Sarah.
When her younger brother signs up he feels compelled to return to Europe to protect him.
They, along with thousands of Canadians, are sent to fight in the third battle at Ypres, a battle against impossible odds, commonly known as Passchendaele.
The film swept the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television 2009 awards, winning best motion picture; best achievement in sound editing, art direction/ production design, costume design and overall sound.
The film plays at Swell Cinema, Chapel Street, at 7pm.
