AN acclaimed play about Eric Morecambe runs at the Theatre Royal, York, from today to Saturday.
Hot on the heels of its hit West End run, one of the most acclaimed biographical plays of the past 10 years, takes to the road on a major national tour.
Anna Murphy Feather Productions and Guy Masterson Theatre Tours International present Eric Morecambe brings sunshine around the UK. In 1977 The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special attracted 29 million viewers – half the entire population of the UK at the time.
In the 25 years since Eric Morecambe's untimely death, his popularity has not waned.
With numerous tribute programmes, TV reruns and DVD releases, his work, as one half of Britain's most popular double act ever, has been kept alive and introduced to a whole new generation of fans.
The play that celebrates the life of the man who brought us sunshine now embarks on a major national tour.
Morecambe offers a moving, gloriously funny portrait of the affectionate lad with the funny bones, the big-hearted perfectionist, the born entertainer.
Bob Golding has won rave reviews for his portrayal of Eric. These include some of the country's favourite comedians who have been bowled over by the actor's extraordinary likeness to the man himself, many of whom were Eric's contemporaries and friends.
Ronnie Corbett said: "Spectacularly wonderful, Bob Golding has hit the bullseye with this stunning portrayal of Eric."
Eric's daughter, Gail said: "This show is a great homage to my father and to his relationship with Ernie. I left the theatre feeling privileged to be Eric Morecambe's daughter.
"He was a man that in his life time generated so much good will and love, at some personal cost. Now all these years on Bob Golding's performance and Tim Whitnall's writing, in a completely unsentimental way, fill the theatre with good will, love and for me at least, a stinging nostalgia of oh so happy times."
Written by Tim Whitnall, performed by Bob Golding and directed by Guy Masterson. More details at www.morecambetheplay.com
