The Whitby Gazette rubbed shoulders with royalty this weekend when reporter Karl Hansell met both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Gazette reporter had been invited to the 150th anniversary party of the Journalist’s Charity, which was also attended by the Royal couple.

Karl was invited by O2 Media as a former winner of their regional Young Journalist of the Year prize, and he said: “It was great to be invited to the 150th anniversary reception, and it is certainly a day I will tell my grandchildren about!”

The reception was held at Stationer’s Hall in London on Wednesday and saw distinguished guests from the world of journalism come together to celebrate the 150th birthday of the charity which over the years has helped tens of thousands of journalists in need.

Around 50 young journalists from around the country also attended the event, to represent the future of the industry.

This week it was revealed that the Gazette recently topped the league table as the best-selling newspaper of all its company titles across the country. In March, the newspaper was runner-up in the best use of digital media in the Johnston Press honours.
