A FAMOUS star of stage and screen was in Whitby on Wednesday to launch a new acting school for the town's youngsters.
Paul Nicholas was at Whitby Pavilion to promote his eponymous school for children and the Just Good Friends actor thrilled the children by doing a turn on the stage.

The Paul Nicholas School of Acting gives the opportunity for youngsters between the ages of four and 18 to learn the skills required to act on stage and screen.

“I believe acting is a brilliant way to give youngsters the confidence and other skills needed to get by in life,” said Paul.

“All my schools are priced so they are accessible to everyone, not just the rich and famous.

“We often have clubs that are for people who are good at sport, well now this is here for people who are good at singing and drama.”

Paul is well versed in the skills needed to succeed in both mediums, having starred in numerous West End shows including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats and Barnum.

Speaking to the Whitby Gazette he said he was impressed at the facilities at Whitby Pavilion.

“It is a proper, old style theatre with great facilities,” he said.

“I’m sure when the children put on the performances the venue will come into its own.”

The budding thespians will learn techniques including television acting, performance skills, voice training, stage awareness and confidence building.

While Paul will act as the figure head for the school, the teaching side will be handled by principal Katrina Stead, who became involved in the school after seeing an advert in the Whitby Gazette.

“I replied saying I was interested in setting up a school here in Whitby and I’m delighted it has come off,” she said.

Professional actress Katrina will use all her 20 years of experience of acting, directing, writing, singing and producing to help the children make the most of the lessons.

The school will be holding an open day at the Pavilion on Saturday 19 April from 10am to 1pm before the classes begin the following week on 26 April. Call Katrina Stead on (01947) 810082 or (07717) 636052.
