Real Gothic v Athletico Gazette
ATHLETICO Gazette won the sparkling new History Of Guns Acedia Cup as a fantastic second half display gave them a 6-2 win over Real Gothic.
An impressive crowd of more than 400 enjoyed the razzmatazz as both teams entered the arena to the own theme tunes – the Goths, unsurprisingly, chose Men in Black while Athletico charged out to Ride of the Valkyries.
The opening exchanges were fairly even but Athletico found the net first when Paul Hurworth tucked away a neat finish.
But the advantage did not last long – the defensive chaos which cost Athletico last year returned as the goths were given too much room in the box and Graeme McKinnon smashed home an equaliser to the delight of their vocal followers.
But the Gazette XI got their act together after the break with Hurworth undoubtedly the star of the show.
First, he spotted the keeper off his line and executed an inch-perfect lob from near the halfway line.
Then a great run saw him waltz round the keeper and slot home from an angle.
With their confidence up and a determination to clinch the game in style, Athletico continued to dominate.
Gazette sports editor Duncan Atkins turned his marker and cracked a vicious shot into the top corner which the keeper did well to get his hand to.
Atkins then turned provider as he burst down the right and squared for John Anderson to score the fifth, with the same man netting again shortly after.
Sportingly, guest referee Stan Jackson decided to reward Real for their efforts with a rather generous penalty, which was expertly converted by McKinnon, sending keeper Rich Davies the wrong way.
So it was left to Gazette deputy editor Jon Stokoe to lift the cup, while Gothic goalkepper James Shoobridge took the man-of-the-match plaudits.
* The game also raised more than £300 for Whitby Town Football Club thanks to the players' fees.
Meanwhile sales of a matchday programme and Real Gothic merchandise – produced by Gothic supremo Mike Uwins (myspace.com/realgothic) – and a raffle organised by Diana and Geoff Campbell helped raise a total of more than £2,000 for Mel's Fund.
