THE Whitby Gazette's Pride of Whitby Awards is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever before.
Friday 10 October at Whitby Pavilion will see the third event of its kind celebrate the achievements of people from Whitby and the surrounding area.
And this year, there are a few changes to ensure the event breaks last year's £1,932 charity total w
hich was split between 11 worthy causes chosen by readers of the Whitby Gazette.
Somerfield has taken over from the Co-op this year to pledge food for the buffet and wine on arrival while The Whitby Catch will supply the seafood for the buffet which will be prepared by award-winning chef Rob Green and his team of chefs.
Ray Scott, manager of Whitby's Somerfield store in Flowergate, said: "We're pleased to be backing this year's Whitby Gazette Pride of Whitby Awards.
"I think it is a great idea to celebrate the efforts of local people and I hope our help will contribute to a successful night and to help raise money for local good causes."
Mark Liddell is lending his support once again to entertain the 300-strong audience and he will be joined by popular local band Yabbadabbadoo and college group Zephyr who will welcome guests to the reception area of the Pavilion.
Channel 4's chief correspondent and Whitby's very own Alex Thomson will team up again with compere Jimmy Lupton to ensure the night runs smoothly while auctioneer Rob Smith will be armed with his gavel to help raise lots of cash during the auction of promises while it is hoped there will also be some surprise celebrity guests.
Whitby Mayor Steve Smith will once again present the awards and the borough's deputy mayor Peter Booth will also be on hand for the night of celebration.
Whitby Gazette editor Damian Holmes said: "The first two Pride of Whitby Awards nights have been superb and showcased some of the talented and hard-working people we have in and around our town.
"The generosity of local people and businesses helps to make this event so successful and it is a great opportunity to give a well-earned pat on the back to 21 special people who help to make our area such a special place.
"I look forward to seeing which people our readers decide to nominate this year – for the past two years judging the categories has not been an easy task but we're looking for even more nominations this time around."
Once again, it is up to you to decide the winners of the Magnificent Seven categories where each winner will receive £50 thanks to the generosity of local businesses as well as flowers courtesy of Sharon Wilkinson at Whitby's Flower Design.
The winner will also receive a commemorative certificate, as will two runners-up in each category.
Tickets for the event (being produced free of charge courtesy of Baker Print Ltd) cost £5 and doors open just after 7pm.
