THE EASTER Bank Holiday Weekend proved to be a washout with the extreme weather conditions causing chaos in the Whitby area.
One family had a lucky escape after their car became trapped in a ford at Grosmont, sparking a large scale rescue operation.

Huge waves battered the coastline, with the road into Sandsend closed as a safety precaution after the Environment Agency put flood warnings in place.

A number of wave-dodgers ignored the safety cordons and put their lives at risk by standing within a couple of feet of the huge swells. Their actions prompted a furious reaction from Coastguard officials.

Snowfall made for some picturesque scenes around Whitby, but the number of day visitors to the town over the Easter weekend was subdued, with many people choosing to stay indoors, rather than brave the wind, rain and snow.
