POLICE and a bomb disposal unit were called to a property in Whitby on Tuesday afternoon after workmen came across an unexploded shell in a garden.
The dangerous device was discovered while work was being carried out in Hudson Street.

Police said the 120mm long unexploded anti-aircraft shell was dug up and handled by workmen, placed in a bucket of wet cement and put in the alleyway between Hudson Street and Normanby Terrace.

Police were at the scene shortly before 4pm and they called for the bomb disposal unit from Catterick Garrison which later carried out a controlled explosion just below Battery Parade.

One Hudson Street resident, who did not want to be named, said: "We went out to see what was going on and the alleyway was closed.

"I talked to another woman and police had told her not to go out for her own safety."
