A TEAM of four Whitby darts players broke the world record for the most legs of darts played in 12 hours.

Gary “Whitby 501” Johnston, Paul “The Warden” Upton, Garry “The Paper Boy” Summerson and Andy “The Cherry Picker” Anderson passed the previous record of 241 legs of 501 and raised it to 267.

At 8am on Saturday - the quartet started the day off on the Target Pro A180 board which had been donated for the challenge.

There was not a single bounce out in12 hours there which organisers say was testament to the quality of the board.

A round robin event got things going and as the day went on, the darts improved and the highlight of day was back to back 180s from Gary Johnston at the start of a leg, which raised the crowd’s excitement.

Gary also got highest finish of the day of 144.

Best leg of the day came from Paul Upton who threw a 13 darter.

The record of 241 legs of 501 was raised to 267.

All in all, 15 players - mainly from Whitby Cricket Club - took part, as the 1sts game against Richmondshire 2nds was rained off .

A raffle and auction took place after the marathon which raised around £2,300 for the Junior section.

A Whitby Cricket Club spokesman said: “We are very proud of this record as all players are just local league players.”

The club thanks all businesses for donating raffle and auction items.
