AS the cricket season rapidly approaches, Whitby Cricket Club look to continue the rise up the respective leagues of the three senior teams.
The 1sts have consolidated their position in the North Yorkshire and South Durham League’s first division while the 2nds narrowly missing out on promotion from division three.
The club’s 3rds face a new challenge in the Derwent Valley League division one, having gained promotion as champions last season.
To aid them with this and the development of the excellent crop of young talent coming the junior ranks, they are pleased to have secured the serves of two top class coaches, Steve Harland and Mike Stones.
Steve is well known throughout the area, both locally within the Esk Valley and the Yorkshire coast from his days in Whitby’s first team, as a fiercely competitive fast bowler and hard-hitting batsman, while Mike has years of experience behind him as a level one county coach with Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
He has a long association with Whitby, with both him and his sons all playing the occasional game for the club.
Training will take place on a Friday evening throughout the season, starting after the Easter holidays alongside the junior sessions run by the long serving Duncan Lawrence.
All players, young and old, are welcome with the first games on the weekend of 21 April for the 1st and 2nd teams and the other teams in the weeks that follow.
To get the season under way the club is also opening the club house and The Cutter Shed Bar on Saturday 14 April from around 6pm onwards for a social get together.
All member and families are welcome. There will be nets beforehand in the afternoon to get back into the swing of it for those wanting to start the season off with a bang.
