We're not floored yet, says chairman
THE biggest week in the history of Whitby Town Football Club kicks off on Saturday when the Blues visit fellow strugglers Buxton in a dramatic six-pointer.
The Blues face the prospect of a first-ever relegation after dropping into the UniBond Premier's bottom three following two defeats over Easter.
Whitby are three points from safety with three games left, with vital home clashes against Witton Albion on Wednesday and promotion-chasing Ilkeston Town next Saturday to finish the campaign.
Chairman Graham Manser this week stressed the importance of the next eight days.
"We are not floored yet," he said.
"Apart from going to Wembley twice, this is the most important week in the club's history.
"Hopefully, two victories will be enough, especially in the matches against Buxton and Witton."
Buxton, who began the Bank Holiday inside the four relegation places, enjoyed thumping 4-1 and 7-0 wins over local rivals and fellow strugglers Matlock Town and Leigh Genesis.
The Bucks put Whitby to the sword on the opening day of the season, winning 2-0 at the Turnbull Ground, but trail by two wins to one against Town overall.
The two sides also met last April when former manager Lee Nogan made a shock return as a player and promptly equalised in a 1-1 draw which helped Town seal their top flight survival.
Things are almost as tight this time around with seven clubs realistically fighting it out to avoid the last two relegation spots.
Basement outfit Prescot Cables are already down with second-bottom Leigh all but mathematically joining them.
Kick-off is the usual 3pm with admission at Buxton's Silverlands ground set at adults 7.50, concessions 4 with under 10s admitted free if accompanied by a paying adult.
* A supporters' bus for tomorrow's crucial game at Buxton leaves the club house at 9am.
