Valiant fightback not enough to save Lealholm

A VALIANT late fightback was not enough to save cup specialists Lealholm from exiting the Northern Echo Cup quarter-finals.

United took the lead late in the first half that Gavin Croll headed Lingdale's opener.

Andy Smith looped the ball home for United's second before Anthony Durrant put the visitors in control with 15 minutes remaining.

Five minutes from time, Mike Thompson ran through the Lingdale defence to pull a goal back and with the last kick of the game, Mike Houlgate scored a second goal for the home side but it was a case of too little too late.

STAITHES Athletic battled back after Mick Fuller had given Boosbeck United a first half lead in the Eileen Hodgson Bowl.

They drew level with a goal from James Armstrong before Gary Smithers put Staithes ahead from the penalty spot.

A defensive error which led to an own goal turned the game in Staithes' favour and although Ryan Peebles set up a tense finish with a goal five minutes from time, Staithes held out.
