Two hundred cheer on friends in school athletics

WHITBY Leisure Centre suffered a huge increase in noise levels as more than 200 local primary school children attended two days of indoor athletics.

Children from the smaller schools – Sleights, Glaisdale, Fylingdales, Lythe, Castleton, Danby, Oakridge and Lealholm – competed against each other while the following day, children from the larger local schools – Airy Hill, Stakesby, West Cliff, East Whitby and a combined team from Goathland and Egton – took part.

Children competed in field type disciplines – vertical jump, speed bounce, chest push, foam javelin, standing triple jump, standing long jump and target throw.

Track events also included one lap sprint, four lap distance, lap relay, six lap Paarlauf relay and 4 x 1 lap relay.

The events were primarily for years five and six children and each school brought a separate team of boys and girls.

The final positions for the smaller schools event were 3 Lythe, 2 Sleights and 1 Danby and for the larger schools, 3 Airy Hill, 2 West Cliff and 1 Stakesby.

Stakesby and West Cliff go on to represent the Whitby cluster at the Ryedale and Whitby combined final to be held today at Norton College.

School sports co-ordinator Pete Woolley said: “Over the two days the level of participation and competition was outstanding.

“Each child thoroughly enjoyed the events in which they participated.

“Team spirit was fantastic and there was much loud encouragement from team-mates during each event.”

Twenty five sports leaders from Whitby Community College helped to run the events – timing, measuring and officiating.

Their contribution was a vital part of the success of the two days.
