Trophies shared in Whitby rowing races

IDEAL weather conditions and flat seas were welcomed by the Friendship Rowing Club on the morning of the Coronation Cup races.

The day started with a clean sweep for the rowing club, taking first, second and third in the men's over 30s race.

A confident performance from C Stead's crew in Pegasus saw off M Ingram and D Clarkson's crew respectively. Only two boats took part in the men's U21 novice race, both coming from the Fishermen's Rowing Club.

Spectators witnessed a close race won by M Kendrew's young crew with S Thompson's taking second.

This placed the Fishermen's ahead on points for the men's trophy.

A more adversarial race took place in the ladies' juniors.

A confident performance from H Dawson's crew of the Fishermen's was sufficient enough to see off second place Friendship crew of K Betts.

J Scarth's crew of the Fishermen's took third.

The Men's U23 race saw a clear win for the Friendship Rowing Club with S Clarkson's crew coming over the line first, followed by the Fishermen crew's in Relentless with S Thompson and Resolution with M Kendrew.

Comparable performances from both clubs left success in both men's and women's trophies down to the last races. The sea's ideal conditions were rapidly worsening and the crews struggled to retain clean strokes.

The ladies senior race saw Y Spencer's group sweep to victory for the Fishermen's followed by V Walker and D Grady, both for Friendship.

This meant that Fishermen's crews won the ladies' trophy with 10 points to Friendship's 5.

A smaller number of crews than usual headed down the course for the men's senior race, presumably due to a clash with England's World Cup tie against Germany.

Two boats from each club contested, and a cool performance from A Young's Friendship crew ensured first place, followed by S Thompson's Fishermen's crew and R Dowson's Friendship crew.

The second place ensured a victory of the men's trophy for the Fishermen's with closely contested points of 11 to Friendships 10.

There is now to be a considerable break in rowing fixtures until Scarborough Regatta on the 26-27 July.
