Three the magic number for Whitby skier

SLEIGHTS skier Thea Fenwick has succeeded in her aim of securing a top three position in a national competition.

In fact, Thea has now scooped not one, but three third places at her first two race meetings of the season.

Thea (8), who took up slalom racing just one year ago, has travelled to Milton Keynes and Glasgow to compete in the British Indoor Grand Prix Series, in the under 11 slalom event.

Her mum Sarah Fenwick said: "It's so exciting seeing Thea reach this level after only a year of ski racing.

"This time last year we were very nervous and just hoped Thea wouldn't come last.

"It's a thrill to see her picking up trophies just one year on."

During the British Indoor Grand Prix Series, Thea will compete in nine races at slopes around the country.

Much like a motor sport grand prix, competitors receive points for their finishing position in each race.

At the end of last year's race series Thea finished in seventh place on the points table, a result which she aims to improve upon this year.

Thea's dad Mark Fenwick said: "Finishing third in her first few races means that Thea has started the season on a high.

"Hopefully these are the first of many national trophies for Thea."

Thea skies for Lions Ski Club and trains twice a week at the indoor slope at Xscape in Castleford.

Any local people or businesses interested in sponsoring Thea should contact the Whitby Gazette sports editor Duncan Atkins on (01947) 829909.
