'The Glove' loses grip on final as Page is too strong

RICKY Heseltine's dream of glory in the Whitby and District Snooker Handicap final ran aground against his Lythe team-mate Simon Page.

Ricky's safety play was rarely less than top drawer standard and he took what few points came his way.

In the first frame, both players made a careful start, refusing risky openings and running for safety behind the colours.

Heseltine made one poor shot, let Page in for a 30 break and however hard he tried, could not bring Page back into his sights and lost 57-67.

The second frame saw Heseltine break up the reds in frustration, allowing Page to build breaks of 23, 14 and 14 to win 60-25 and go two frames up.

To his credit Heseltine – nicknamed "The Glove" – had learnt his lesson – however long it takes, don't give Page the slightest chance as he never gives his opponent an easy shot. The third frame saw Heseltine with his back to the wall, teeth gritted, taking no risks.

And in a low scoring long, tight frame, Ricky had first chance on the final black and took it to win 52-41.

The crowd settled down for another long frame, only for Page to pot a superb opening long red, follow up with a break of 41 and leave "The Glove" in a snooker.

Lesser opponents would have gone to pieces, but Heseltine played a superb frame from that point.

However he could not overcome Page's brilliant start and lost the frame 49-71.

Page, who regularly outpots his opponents, showed his defensive skill in maintaining a cast-iron defence of the few small breaks he made to win the final, which was played at Whitby Conservative Club, 3-1.
