Tears of delight in fencing final

DANBY twins Victoria and Amelia Hide are going from strength to strength in the world of fencing.

The pair had a very successful year in 2009 with Victoria finishing first and Amelia sixth in the Leon Paul Junior fencing under 11 series.

The Hide family were expecting the girls to be intimidated moving up into the U13 Leon Paul age group – but they are currently ranking second and third halfway through the series.

Both girls got through the Yorkshire qualifier for the British Fencing Championships, with Victoria placed first and Amelia second.

The British Youth Fencing Championships were held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield with different age groups and weapons competing over three days. The girls were met by coach Brian Matless who reassured them by his presence and coaching throughout.

The competition runs with the competitors being split into different pools.

They fence each competitor within that pool, with the winner of each match being the first to five hits. The results are then all amalgamated with the other pools and then the competition goes to direct elimination. The fencer with the highest points fences the one with the least and the elimination process begins.

Amelia was in the final with Amelia Wightwick from London. The final was extremely tense, with the score being the first to 10. The match was even at nine all with Amelia taking the final point to win the title. There were tears all round and a big hug for the coach.

Amelia was Brian's 25th national champion in his 15 years of coaching.

Both girls will represent Yorkshire at the National Pentathlon Championships in August with the disciplines of running, riding, fencing, shooting and swimming.
