TORRENTIAL rain caused a storm by forcing the abandonment of Whitby Cricket Club 2nds’ opening game of the new season on Saturday.
Chasing a victory target of 210 at home to Thornaby 2nds, the 2nds were in with a shout at 104/5 before the heavens opened.
And as the heavy rain continued to pour, any lingering hopes of Whitby knocking off the required runs vanished as quickly as the blazing sunshine had just hours earlier.
Stuart Marsden and Ricky Hall had both taken four wickets and Thornaby looked to be wobbling before Zahid Mehmood stepped to the crease and blasted 75 to lead his side to a competitive total.
The 2nds started badly, slumping to 41/5 before an unbeaten sixth-wicket stand of 63 between Ian Suckling and Luke Harrison threatened to save the day before the elements intervened.
