Standing and Todd pick up merit trophy

WHITBY Crown Green Bowling Club held its two player team merit, the open competition, on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

The 48 competitors entered as a pair and were then drawn into six groups, with each pair playing the other three pairs within their group as individual games.

Their combined scores gave them an overall position within their group, with the winner of each group and the two highest runners-up across the groups going through to the quarter-finals.

Group A winners I Richardson (Whitby) and E McCormack (North Cliff) 120 pts, Group B winners P Mottram and D Barrowcliffe (Shireoaks) 122 pts, Group C winners A Deighton and C Bielby (Dukes Park) with a maximum 126 pts, Group D winners: D Swift and D Cooper (North Cliff) 118, Group E winners R Thompson and J Cooper (North Cliff) 121 pts, Group F Winners K Gates (Whitby) and R Child (North Cliff) 118 pts.

The two highest runners-up were G Watson (Whitby) and M Gates (Borough) with 118 pts and A Standing (Dukes Park) and P Todd (Hunmanby) with 115 points.

In the semi-finals, Watson failed to match the precise bowling of Mottram, losing 21-11 and as his partners game was already laying 14 across, gates conceded.

The other semi-final had a similar ending as Todd fought back well against Thompson, eventually winning 21-16, while Standing had already managed to reach 17, Cooper conceded on the 17th end 17-14.

Although Mottram and Barrowcliffe were firm favourites to retain their title, having won this event last year, it was Standing who took an early lead going 13-7 up over Mottram.

But Mottram replied with a maximum eight from the next four ends, bringing the scoreline to a more respectable 15-13.

Meanwhile in the other final, things had been pretty evenly matched up to 14 across, but from here on Barrowcliffe failed to score and Todd ran out winner, 21-14.

Standing had increased his score to 16 and Mottram, like those in the semi-finals, conceded at 16 across, leaving Alan Standing and Phil Todd to pick up the trophy and prize money from Whitby Bowling Club president Winifred Courts.

Event organiser Geoff Watson praised the ladies for providing some excellent refreshments and thanked anyone who helped on the day, with special thanks to Mrs Courts for sponsoring the event.
