Staithes are the champions
STAITHES Cricket Club claimed their first-ever Beckett League Premier Division title by just one point in a day of nail-biting drama.
Staithes arrived at Flamborough knowing that a victory, while also attaining full bonus points, would result in them claiming their first ever Premier division title.
After winning the toss it was no surprise that Staithes elected to bat. Openers Richard Hegarty (89 not out) and Chris Barritt (59) batted fluently to take the total to 109 before Barritt was first out caught on the boundary edge.
However Hegarty continued to bat with great skill and with the help of quickfire 20s from Bowes and Theaker, Staithes managed to go past the 200 mark and thus attained the maximum five batting points.
However, the Flamborough weather was proving to be a major headache with the players forced to leave the field on four separate occasions, reducing the match from a 45-over contest to a maximum of 39 overs per side.
It was with the changeable weather in mind that skipper Richard Ward decided to declare the visitors' innings after 35 overs. This was in the hope that it would give sufficient playing time to bowl out the home team and also claim the maximum five bowling bonus points.
Things again started well for the visitors with Thompson and Bowes both claiming wickets in their first overs.
However Flamborough were not about to lie down with Artley (23) and A Leeson (30) in particular providing stubborn resistance. It took the introduction of Steve Thornton, who claimed a couple of wickets in one over, to give Staithes' quest for wickets new momentum.
And when Bowes was re-introduced to the attack to claim the final wicket with just over five overs left, victory was confirmed, sealing the league title by one point from Staxton.
