Staithes overhaul three-goal cup deficit
STAITHES Athletic pulled off a remarkable fightback to stun Goldsborough in the pick of the weekend's matches.
Northern Echo Cup
Goldsborough 5 Staithes 6 aet
Trailing 4-1 with 10 minutes left, Staithes pulled off a great comeback to take Goldsborough to take their quarter-final to extra time and with virtually the last kick of the game, Mike Young fired home the winner.
The tie had started well for Goldsborough, leading 2-0 at the break and even though Neil Calvert pulled one back, goals from Karl Flatters and Sam Dowie looked to have won the tie.
However, two penalty conversions from Calvert coupled with a late Gary Gilding goal took the match to extra time.
Goldsborough restored their lead yet again during the first period of extra time but Staithes hit back to level through Jamie Waters before Young's late strike.
Whitby Benevolent Cup
Stokesley 8 Whitby Fishermen 2
Stokesley reached the semi-final stage with a comfortable 8-2 win over Whitby Fishermen.
Michael Bulmer set Stokesley on their way before Kevin Hugill and Mark Shimwell scored two goals apiece before the break.
A further two goals in five minutes from Fishermen's Cameron Ward helped reduce the damage but Hugill struck again in the second half with Stewart Wise completing the scoring for the home side.
League
Lealholm 2 Lingdale United 7
IN the weekend's other game, Lingdale United beat Lealholm 7-2 with Gavin Croll putting United ahead with 15 minutes gone.
Tom Gale equalised for Lealholm before the break but within a minute of the restart, Josh Mitchell broke away to restore Lingdale's advantage.
Croll added a third, heading home after a free-kick had come back off the bar and Andy Smith turned before blasting the ball into the back of the net minutes later.
Duncan Marson kept Lealholm's hopes alive when he got on the end of a cross from Mike Thompson but a half-volley from Smith and another on the break from Mitchell put the result beyond doubt.
With virtually the last kick of the match, Lealholm added to their woes when a tackle on Josh Bint resulted in an own goal.
