Sports fixtures hit again by big freeze

THE big freeze has once again played havoc with sports fixtures in the Whitby area.

Continuing snow and freezing temperatures are leaving pitches unplayable as Whitby endures its worst winter for three decades.

Some football and rugby teams have now not played for five weeks.

Whitby Town's UniBond League game at home to Nantwich Town on Saturday was called off on Friday morning after a pitch inspection.

The Blues have not kicked a ball since 12 December when they won 3-1 at Ossett Town and are facing severe fixture congestion as the backlog piles up.

Chairman Graham Manser told the Gazette on Friday morning: "It is playable under the surface but you have to consider the terraces, car park, Nantwich having to travel from Cheshire and weigh up all probabilities.

"Even if it doesn't snow again, what's there would still have to be shifted."

All fixtures in the Jack Hatfield Sports Teesside Football League were postponed, along with all the games in the Scarborough and District League.

Whitby Maroons' rugby game at home to Chester-le-Street was also off, along with all other matches in their division.

But hopes are now high the worst of the wintry woe is behind us and the sporting calendar can finally resume.

The five-day forecast for the Whitby area is for a warmer, drier week with the possibility of some snow tomorrow, with daytime temperatures from 1-3 degrees celsius.
