Sports lesson from Argentina

INTERNATIONAL volleyball arrived in Whitby when one of Argentina's most exclusive and prestigious schools, St Andrew's Scots School from Buenos Aires, linked up with school children in the area.

The Argentinian volleyball team is touring the UK and as guests of local volleyball club North Riding Eagles, they agreed to come to Whitby Leisure Centre to help coach and promote volleyball in the area.

All the staff at Whitby Leisure Centre were great in making guests welcome and ensuring everyone had a great time.

The volleyball promotion started with an exhibition match between the Argentinians and some of the Whitby players.

An English Volleyball Scholarship coach explained the techniques and systems of play to young volleyball players from Stokesley and Eskdale schools.

The students were then put into small groups, working with an Argentinean player or with experienced English players.

They spent the session learning and improving their basic volleyball skills which they later put into use in mixed teams when everyone took part in practice matches.

The idea was to help build upon the excellent work that is already being done with grass roots volleyball at Danby, Whitby Leisure Centre and by PE teacher Andrew Raw at Eskdale School.

The promotion and development of volleyball in the Whitby area is supported by the English Volleyball Association, Scarborough Borough Council's Sport Unlimited programme and Danby Sports Association.

After the Argentinians finished their coaching of local youngsters, they enjoyed their tour of Whitby and were absolutely delighted with Whitby Museum where the staff once again gave them a friendly welcome.
