TWO local sports clubs have recently received funding from Sportivate.

Whitby Beach Volleyball Club has gratefully accepted a cheque for £1,010 and the Whitby Wizards Basketball Club £1,130.

Sportivate is a £32 million Lottery programme that gives 14 to 25-year-olds access to six-week courses in a range of sports.

The programme is aimed at those who are not currently choosing to take part in sport in their own time, or are doing so for a very limited amount of time, and will support them to continue playing sport in their community after the six weeks is up.

During the six weeks, a participant may work towards an event or personal challenge.

Sportivate is fully inclusive and targets participants across this group, including young people who have a disability, males and females.

Sports co-ordinator Pete Woolley said: “I was delighted to be able to place a bid on behalf of two sports clubs that are going from strength to strength.

“Whitby Wizards has recently extended its intake and now accepts children as young as five, and coaches students up to the age of 25.

“The beach volleyball club has had a number of significant successes with players playing locally, nationally and internationally. It is fantastic to have support of local basketball coach Martin Roberts and volleyball coach Anthony Laffan.”

Damien Smith, Delivery Manager for North Yorkshire Sports, said: “We are pleased to support the partnership between Whitby Community College, Whitby Wizards Basketball Club and Whitby Volleyball Club and to have awarded them Sportivate funding which was used to engage young people in the two sports and encourage them to become regular members of both clubs.

“We hope that participants continue to enjoy both sports and that the clubs continue to develop with the support of the school.”
