Sleights pair team up for knockout cup

Sleights Bowling Club played in the semi-finals of the zone three (East Yorkshire), club knockout competition, against Dunnington away.

They were beaten by a strong side on their very fast home Green, 67 to 101.

The club were very pleased and honoured to be invited to the official opening of the new Mulgrave Bowling Green, where some of the members played a number of ends against other invited guests and were very impressed by the standard of the green.

The annual Gordon Fletcher Trophy was played for. This is a pairs knockout competition, with partners drawn at random.

Each player having four woods, over 11 ends, and an entry of 19 teams.

The Saturday started with a sit down lunch in the club pavilion, followed by the competition, which was played up to the semi-finals, and concluded with a faith tea.

On Sunday, play started at 2pm with the semi-finals between John Pybus and Fran Bogg against Keith Thompson and Freda Lawson, as well as John Dixon and Joyce Blythman against Steve Harrison and Betty McLean.

Both matches were excellent to watch, as the standard of play was of the highest quality, both were won by just one shot.

With Keith and Freda going through to meet Steve and Betty in the final. This was a real nail-biting match, typified on the fifth end which was tied, by a wood from both sides laid on the Jack.

They went into the final end all square, six each. With Steve holding, it went to the last wood, which Keith bowled slightly weighted.

It struck the holding wood and rolled in and the Gordon Fletcher Trophy, for this years winners Keith Thompson and Freda Lawson.
