Seven schools fight it out in Drax Cup

SEVEN schools from the Whitby Area contested the first round of the under nines Drax Cup Cricket competition – East Whitby, Castleton, Lealholm, Stakesby, Ruswarp, Sleights and Lythe – earlier this month.

Kwik Cricket is a shortened version of the game with schools fielding eight in a team.

Each team must have at least two members of the opposite sex on the playing area.

Batsmen bat for two overs whether or not they are out – if they are out, their team loses five runs.

The festival was held at the Mulgrave sports facility at Lythe.

After a close-fought contest, the three schools that qualified to represent the Whitby area at the Ryedale and Whitby final were Stakesby – 1st, East Whitby – 2nd and Ruswarp – 3rd.

From there, Stakesby and Ruswarp have now reached the area final to be held in York next month.

Stakesby won the local event with 16 points and East Whitby, Ruswarp and Lythe tied for second on 14 points.

East Whitby beat both Lythe and Ruswarp so went through in second and Ruswarp beat Lythe so they went through in third.

The festival was a great success and as usual, Young Leaders from Whitby Community College and Caedmon ensured there was a high standard of umpiring and scoring throughout the day.
